What is HLTAID009 Provide CPR all about?
HLTAID009 Provide CPR is the nationally recognised unit of competency for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in community and workplace settings.
CPR helps maintain blood flow and oxygen to the brain and vital organs when a person is unconscious and not breathing normally. It is used while emergency medical assistance is on the way.
The course covers the skills and knowledge required to:
- Recognise a life-threatening emergency.
- Check for danger and protect yourself, bystanders and the casualty.
- Assess a person’s response and breathing.
- Call Triple Zero (000) and communicate with emergency services.
- Perform CPR on an adult and infant manikin.
- Use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Place an unconscious, breathing casualty in the recovery position.
- Respond appropriately if regurgitation or vomiting occurs.
- Hand over accurate information to paramedics.
- Review the incident and identify any need for further support.
The unit is delivered in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidance. You can review the current guidance through the Australian Resuscitation Council and the official unit information on training.gov.au.

Learn CPR in Albury Wodonga with Jackie Hislop RN
Yatson Training’s lead trainer, Jackie Hislop, is a Registered Nurse. Her clinical experience supports a practical approach to CPR training.
You will not simply read instructions or watch a demonstration. You will practise the required skills using training manikins and AED equipment. Jackie explains each stage clearly and provides feedback as you work through the procedures.
The sessions are designed to be:
- Hands-on: Spend time practising compressions, rescue breaths and AED use.
- Interactive: Ask questions and work through realistic scenarios.
- Supportive: Build your confidence before completing the assessment.
- Relevant: Connect the training to your workplace, community or home.
- Practical: Focus on skills you may need to use under pressure.
This approach helps you understand both the process and the reason behind each action. It also gives you an opportunity to identify areas that need more practice before assessment.

What you will practise during HLTAID009
Use the DRSABCD action plan
Follow a clear sequence when responding to a suspected cardiac arrest:
- D – Danger: Check that the area is safe.
- R – Response: Check whether the person responds to your voice or touch.
- S – Send for help: Call 000 or direct someone else to call.
- A – Airway: Open and check the airway.
- B – Breathing: Check for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
- C – CPR: Start CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
- D – Defibrillation: Attach an AED as soon as one is available and follow its prompts.
Perform effective compressions
During training, you will practise correct hand placement, body position, compression rate and compression depth.
For an adult, CPR generally follows a ratio of 30 compressions to two breaths. If rescue breaths cannot be given, compression-only CPR is still encouraged. The most important action is to start compressions promptly when they are required.
The assessment requires you to perform uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. You will also practise CPR on an infant manikin.
Use an AED safely
An AED analyses the heart’s rhythm and provides voice or visual instructions. You do not need to diagnose the rhythm yourself.
During the course, you will practise how to:
- Turn on the AED.
- Apply the pads correctly.
- Follow the device prompts.
- Stand clear during analysis and shock delivery.
- Resume CPR with minimal interruption.
Read the Healthdirect CPR guide for general public information. In a real emergency, call 000 and follow the instructions provided by the emergency call-taker.

Workplace Safety and CPR compliance
A current CPR qualification is often required for people working in offices, schools, childcare, health care, disability services, fitness, construction, hospitality and other workplaces.
Completing HLTAID009 can support your Workplace First Aid certification requirements. However, your employer, regulator, industry body or workplace risk assessment may require additional units.
For example:
- HLTAID009 Provide CPR focuses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid covers a broader range of injuries and medical emergencies.
- Childcare First Aid course HLTAID012 is designed for people providing first aid in an education and care setting.
Check your role requirements before booking. If you are unsure whether you need CPR only or a broader first aid qualification, speak with Yatson Training.
Yatson provides flexible Corporate First Aid training for businesses in Albury, Wodonga and surrounding areas. Training can be arranged for corporate teams, small groups and individuals. Contact the team to discuss an onsite or scheduled option.
