Essential skills: Managing common childcare emergencies
During your Childcare First Aid course HLTAID012, we focus on the most common risks found in education and care settings.
Anaphylaxis Management
Anaphylaxis (a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction) is a major concern in childcare. You must be able to recognise the symptoms and act without hesitation.
- Check for signs of swelling, difficulty breathing, or a pale appearance.
- Locate the child's adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen).
- Administer the injection into the outer mid-thigh.
- Call 000 immediately.
- Record the time of administration and monitor the child.
Asthma Emergencies
Asthma is incredibly common among Australian children. A sudden attack can be frightening for both the child and the educator.
- Sit the child upright and remain calm.
- Give 4 separate puffs of a blue/grey reliever puffer (salbutamol) through a spacer.
- Wait 4 minutes. If there is no improvement, give another 4 puffs.
- Call 000 if the child still cannot breathe normally.
Paediatric CPR
The technique for CPR on an infant (under 12 months) differs significantly from an adult.
- Use two fingers for chest compressions on an infant.
- Maintain a depth of about one-third of the chest.
- Follow a ratio of 30 compressions to 2 breaths.
- Continue until professional medical help arrives or the infant begins to breathe normally.
