What is Workplace First Aid Compliance all about?
Workplace first aid compliance is the legal and ethical framework that ensures your business is prepared for medical emergencies. It is not just about having a dusty box in the cupboard; it is about having the right equipment, the right people, and the right skills ready at a moment’s notice. Under Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, every PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) has a duty of care to provide adequate first aid facilities and trained personnel.
When your compliance works, it saves lives and protects your business from heavy fines. When it fails, it leaves your staff vulnerable and your company legally exposed.
1. You Haven't Conducted a Risk Assessment
Many businesses assume a "one size fits all" approach to first aid. This is a mistake. A low-risk office in Albury / Wodonga has different needs than a high-risk manufacturing plant.
- The Problem: You are using a generic first aid kit that doesn't account for specific hazards like chemical burns or heavy machinery injuries.
- The Fix: Review your workplace hazards. Document the types of injuries that could occur and tailor your kits and training accordingly.
2. Your First Aid Ratios Are Outdated
Safe Work Australia recommends specific ratios for trained first aiders. If your team has grown but your number of trained staff hasn't, you are out of compliance.
- The Problem: You have 60 staff members but only one person with a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate.
- The Fix: Ensure you have at least one first aider for every 50 workers in a low-risk environment, and one for every 25 in a high-risk environment.

3. Training Certificates Have Expired
First aid skills fade over time. A certificate from five years ago does not count.
- The Problem: Your staff believe they are covered, but their qualifications have lapsed. (Most first aid certificates expire every three years, while CPR should be refreshed every 12 months).
- The Fix: Audit your staff training records today. Book a Corporate First Aid training session with Yatson Training by calling 0450 533 179 to get everyone back up to speed.
4. No Coverage for Different Shifts
Compliance must be maintained "at all times." If your only first aider works 9-to-5, but your site operates 24/7, you have a massive gap.
- The Problem: An accident happens on the night shift, and nobody knows how to respond.
- The Fix: Map out your roster. Ensure every shift has a designated, trained first aider on-site.
5. Kits Are Inaccessible or Empty
A first aid kit is useless if it is locked in a manager’s office or is missing essential supplies.
- The Problem: Staff can’t find the kit, or when they do, the bandages are gone and the saline is expired.
- The Fix: Place kits in clearly marked, central locations. Assign a "First Aid Officer" to check and restock kits every month.

6. You Are Missing an AED
In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, a defibrillator (AED) is the most critical piece of equipment you can own.
- The Problem: Your workplace relies solely on manual CPR while waiting for an ambulance (which can take 10+ minutes).
- The Fix: Purchase an AED and ensure your team knows how to use it. We include AED instruction in all our Learn CPR in Albury / Wodonga courses.
7. Remote and Mobile Workers Are Forgotten
If your staff travel for work or operate in remote areas, they need portable first aid solutions.
- The Problem: A technician is injured in a company vehicle but has no medical supplies on hand.
- The Fix: Equip every company vehicle with a compliant "Ute and Van" first aid kit. Ensure these staff have basic life-saving skills.
8. Lack of Signage and Communication
Compliance isn't just about what you have; it's about what people know.
- The Problem: New employees have no idea who the first aiders are.
- The Fix: Use high-visibility signage. Post the names and photos of trained first aiders in common areas.

9. Training Is Not "Hands-On" Enough
Online-only courses often fail to provide the muscle memory needed in a real emergency.
- The Problem: Staff "pass" a quiz but freeze when they actually have to perform chest compressions.
- The Fix: Choose Workplace First Aid certification that focuses on practical, interactive scenarios. At Yatson Training, we make our sessions engaging and enjoyable to ensure the skills stick.
10. No Incident Reporting System
If you don't record "near misses" or minor injuries, you can't improve your safety culture.
- The Problem: Small accidents go unreported until a major one occurs.
- The Fix: Implement a simple incident log. Review it quarterly to see if you need more kits or specific training, such as a Childcare First Aid course HLTAID012 for those working with children.

Our Recommendation

Is it expensive to train a whole team?
No. In fact, it is much more cost-effective than the potential fines for non-compliance under Safe Work Australia standards. We offer flexible pricing for small groups and corporate clients in Albury / Wodonga.
