If you need to update your CPR skills, this is a practical time to book. Yatson Training is promoting HLTAID009 Provide CPR training in the Albury Wodonga area during the week commencing 17 August.

The course is suitable for individuals, small groups and workplaces that need current CPR skills for employment, safety or compliance. Book directly through the Yatson Training courses page, or telephone Yatson Training on 0450 533 179 to confirm available sessions and discuss your requirements.

What is HLTAID009 Provide CPR all about?

HLTAID009 Provide CPR is the nationally recognised unit that teaches you how to respond when a person is unconscious and not breathing normally.

CPR combines chest compressions and rescue breaths. Its function is to maintain blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain and vital organs until emergency medical help arrives.

The unit applies to people who may need to provide CPR in a workplace, community or home setting. You can read the official unit information on training.gov.au.

During your course, learn how to:

  • Recognise a cardiac arrest.
  • Check for danger and assess a person’s response.
  • Call Triple Zero (000) for emergency assistance.
  • Open and manage the airway.
  • Check for normal breathing.
  • Perform CPR on an adult and infant manikin.
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely.
  • Communicate relevant information to emergency services.
  • Review the first aid response after the incident.

The assessment includes practical CPR performance. You must demonstrate sustained CPR on adult and infant manikins and follow the prompts of an AED trainer.

Why learn CPR in Albury / Wodonga this week?

CPR skills are relevant in offices, warehouses, construction sites, schools, childcare services, sporting clubs, retail premises and homes. A cardiac emergency can happen without warning. The first few minutes matter while you wait for paramedics.

If you have been searching for Learn CPR in Albury Wodonga, a local course makes it easier to meet your training requirements without unnecessary travel. It also gives you the opportunity to ask questions about situations that may arise in your workplace or community.

A current CPR certificate may be required for your role. This can include work in:

  • Education and childcare.
  • Aged care and community services.
  • Health and fitness.
  • Construction and trades.
  • Hospitality and retail.
  • Transport and logistics.
  • Corporate and office environments.

If your role requires broader first aid skills, consider the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course. For education and care professionals, Yatson Training also provides the Childcare First Aid course HLTAID012.

Learn with Jackie Hislop RN

Yatson Training’s lead trainer, Jackie Hislop, is a Registered Nurse (RN) with experience in healthcare and first aid education.

Jackie uses a practical teaching approach. You do not simply sit through a presentation and memorise a checklist. You practise the physical skills, ask questions and receive guidance while working through realistic scenarios.

This approach helps you understand both the procedure and the reason behind each step. It also allows the trainer to correct hand position, compression technique, body position and AED use before your assessment.

Yatson Training aims to make training interactive, clear and relevant. The focus is on developing skills you can use, rather than treating CPR as a dry, mandatory exercise.

What happens during CPR training?

The HLTAID009 course follows the DRSABCD action plan recommended by the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation.

Use these steps when responding to a suspected cardiac arrest:

  • D – Danger: Check the area. Protect yourself, the person and bystanders.
  • R – Response: Check whether the person responds to your voice or touch.
  • S – Send for help: Call Triple Zero (000), or direct someone else to call.
  • A – Airway: Open the airway and check for obvious obstruction.
  • B – Breathing: Check for normal breathing. Gasping is not normal breathing.
  • C – CPR: Start chest compressions and provide rescue breaths if trained and willing.
  • D – Defibrillation: Attach an AED as soon as it is available and follow its prompts.

For adult CPR, ANZCOR recommends:

  • Give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 breaths.
  • Aim for approximately 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
  • Minimise interruptions to chest compressions.
  • Continue until the person responds, begins breathing normally, you are unable to continue, or a healthcare professional takes over.

This information does not replace practical training. In a real emergency, call Triple Zero (000) and follow the instructions of the emergency services operator.

Hands-on practice with adult and infant manikins

HLTAID009 is not limited to adult CPR. The unit also requires you to demonstrate CPR on an infant manikin.

You will practise:

  • Adult chest compressions.
  • Infant chest compressions.
  • Rescue breaths using appropriate techniques.
  • Use of resuscitation barrier devices.
  • Safe AED operation.
  • Working with another rescuer.
  • Managing interruptions and fatigue.
  • Giving a clear handover to emergency services.

The physical assessment requires you to perform CPR on the floor. Wear comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes. If you have a knee, back or mobility concern, tell Yatson Training before the course so reasonable adjustments can be discussed. The assessment requirements still need to be met.

Our recommendation: refresh CPR every 12 months

A certificate may have a longer administrative validity period, but CPR skills can decline when they are not practised. Many employers, regulators and industry bodies expect CPR skills to be refreshed annually.

Check your employer’s policy and the requirements for your role. Do not wait until your certificate is about to expire if your workplace requires annual currency.

Refresh your skills when you:

  • Receive an annual workplace reminder.
  • Change employers or responsibilities.
  • Start working in childcare, education, health or community services.
  • Need to complete Workplace First Aid certification.
  • Have not practised CPR for more than 12 months.
  • Want to improve your confidence using an AED.
