What is HLTAID012 all about?
HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the first aid course designed for people who work with infants and children.
It teaches you how to respond to common and serious medical emergencies in childcare, kindergarten, outside school hours care and other education settings. The course focuses on the physical differences between adults, children and infants, including how to provide CPR, manage choking and respond to asthma or anaphylaxis.
The unit covers practical first aid responses such as:
- Assessing an emergency and keeping yourself, bystanders and the child safe.
- Calling emergency services and giving clear information.
- Providing CPR to adults, children and infants.
- Using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Managing choking, bleeding, burns, fractures and shock.
- Responding to asthma and anaphylaxis.
- Communicating with parents, carers and emergency services.
- Completing workplace incident reports and reviewing the response.
The current HLTAID012 unit is listed on training.gov.au. It applies to early childhood educators, school-age care workers and other professionals who may need to provide first aid to infants and children.
Why childcare educators need specialised first aid training
Children can deteriorate quickly. A small child may not be able to explain what has happened, describe their symptoms or ask for the help they need. Infants may show only subtle signs of illness or distress.
Childcare educators also work in environments where several children may need supervision at the same time. An incident can happen during meals, outdoor play, sleep time, excursions or routine activities. You need to know what to do while another educator supervises the rest of the group and contacts the child’s family.
General workplace training is useful, but it may not provide enough practice with infant and child emergencies. HLTAID012 gives you an education and care-focused approach.
You will practise responding to realistic scenarios involving:
- Infant and child CPR.
- Choking during meals or play.
- Asthma attacks.
- Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.
- Febrile convulsions and seizures.
- Falls, head injuries and suspected spinal injuries.
- Bleeding, burns and soft-tissue injuries.
- Drowning and breathing difficulties.
- Poisoning and suspected envenomation.
Your training should also support your service’s policies, emergency action plans and reporting procedures. Always follow your workplace requirements and the current guidance from ACECQA.

What you will practise
HLTAID012 assessment requires you to demonstrate practical skills on adult, child and infant manikins. This is important because the technique, positioning and response can differ depending on the casualty’s age and size.
During the practical session, you will practise how to:
- Check the scene. Identify hazards and protect yourself, the child and other people nearby.
- Assess the casualty. Check responsiveness and breathing, then identify signs of illness or injury.
- Call for help. Contact emergency services and provide accurate information.
- Start CPR. Demonstrate CPR on an adult, child and infant manikin.
- Use an AED. Follow the device prompts and maintain safety around the casualty.
- Manage choking. Use the appropriate response for an infant or child.
- Respond to asthma and anaphylaxis. Recognise warning signs and follow the child’s emergency action plan.
- Provide ongoing care. Monitor the casualty and adjust your response as their condition changes.
- Report the incident. Complete the required verbal and written workplace documentation.
- Review the response. Identify what worked, what could be improved and whether further support is needed.
The course uses practical equipment, realistic scenarios and guided demonstrations. You will not simply sit through a presentation and leave without using the skills.

Jackie has more than four years’ experience as a Registered Nurse and seven years’ personal carer experience in aged care. Her background includes medical care, client support and facilitating training.

HLTAID012, CPR currency and workplace safety
Completing HLTAID012 is an important part of Workplace Safety in an education and care setting. It should be supported by a well-maintained first aid kit, accessible emergency plans, clear staff responsibilities and regular skills refreshers.
In general:
- The HLTAID012 first aid qualification is commonly refreshed every three years.
- CPR skills are commonly refreshed every 12 months.
- Asthma and anaphylaxis management training may also have specific currency requirements.
- Your service must check the requirements that apply in your state or territory.
- Keep records of certificates, CPR updates and staff training dates.
A current HLTAID012 certificate does not necessarily mean your CPR component is current. Check the date of your last CPR training separately.
The course content is delivered in line with first aid guidance determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council and other relevant Australian clinical bodies. Review current guidance through the Australian Resuscitation Council and ANZCOR first aid guidelines.
HLTAID012 is different from HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, which is a broader first aid unit used across many workplaces. If you work directly with children and infants, confirm which course your employer, service or regulator requires before booking.
Our recommendation
Do not wait until your certificate has expired before checking your training needs.
Review your staff register now. Confirm which educators hold HLTAID012. Check the date of each person’s last CPR update. Identify gaps before they create a compliance problem or leave your service without enough current first aiders.
Also review your practical readiness. Ask your team:
- Can everyone locate the first aid kit quickly?
- Do staff know where emergency action plans are stored?
- Can educators identify the signs of anaphylaxis and asthma distress?
- Can they respond to infant and child choking?
- Does the service have a clear process for calling families and documenting incidents?
- Are relief staff and new team members included in training plans?
Professional training is a cost-effective way to maintain capability across your team. It also gives educators an opportunity to practise before an emergency occurs.

FAQ
Is HLTAID012 essential for childcare educators?
HLTAID012 is the education and care-specific first aid unit commonly used for childcare and early learning settings. Confirm the exact requirements for your service and jurisdiction.
How often does CPR need to be refreshed?
CPR is generally refreshed every 12 months. Check your certificate date and your workplace requirements. Do not assume that a current three-year first aid certificate means your CPR is still current.
Can I complete HLTAID012 if I am not currently working in childcare?
Yes. Individuals, students and people preparing for work in education and care may be able to enrol. Check the course requirements before booking.
Can Yatson Training provide group or workplace training?
Yes. Yatson Training provides flexible, hands-on training for corporate clients, childcare services, small groups and individuals. Telephone 0450 533 179 to discuss your training needs.
Why choose practical training instead of an online-only course?
Practical training gives you the opportunity to physically practise CPR, infant care techniques, choking responses and emergency procedures under trainer supervision. These skills are easier to perform correctly when you have used the equipment and received feedback.
How do I book the 2 October session?
Use the direct enrolment portal, visit the HLTAID012 course page or telephone Yatson Training on 0450 533 179.
