What is HLTAID012 all about?
HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the specialist first aid qualification for people working with infants and children.
It teaches you how to respond to common emergencies in childcare, kindergarten, family day care, outside school hours care and similar education settings. The course focuses on practical actions you may need to take before emergency services arrive.
You will learn how to:
- Assess an emergency safely.
- Check an infant or child for a response and normal breathing.
- Perform CPR on adults, children and infants.
- Use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Manage choking, bleeding, shock and serious injuries.
- Respond to asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies.
- Follow emergency procedures and communicate with families, colleagues and emergency services.
Yatson Training is running an HLTAID012 Childcare First Aid course in the Albury-Wodonga area during the week commencing 17 August. This is an opportunity for local educators and childcare teams to update their skills with experienced trainers in an engaging, practical environment.

Why HLTAID012 matters in childcare
Children can require immediate first aid for many different reasons. A fall, choking incident, allergic reaction, asthma attack or sudden collapse can happen quickly. Educators must be prepared to act while another staff member contacts emergency services and manages the rest of the group.
Under the National Quality Framework, education and care services must ensure that appropriate staff with current first aid, anaphylaxis and emergency asthma management training are available as required. You can review the current requirements through ACECQA’s first aid qualifications and training information.
HLTAID012 is designed specifically for education and care settings. It is more relevant to childcare work than a general first aid course because it includes infant- and child-specific scenarios, techniques and assessment requirements.
Remember that course currency matters. First aid training is generally renewed every three years, while CPR skills need to be refreshed annually under the education and care requirements. Check your certificate dates, staff register and workplace procedures before your current training expires.
What you will practise during the course
A Childcare First Aid course HLTAID012 should give you time to practise, not just listen to a presentation.
During Yatson Training’s practical sessions, you will work through realistic situations using training equipment and manikins. You will be expected to demonstrate the required skills and explain the decisions you make.
You will practise how to:
- Complete a DRSABCD assessment (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation).
- Position an infant or child safely for assessment and CPR.
- Deliver chest compressions and rescue breaths using age-appropriate techniques.
- Recognise when breathing is abnormal and begin CPR promptly.
- Apply an AED safely.
- Respond to an infant or child who is choking.
- Manage bleeding, wounds, burns and suspected fractures.
- Recognise the signs of anaphylaxis and asthma.
- Follow an allergy or asthma action plan.
- Communicate clearly with emergency services on 000.
- Record and report an incident according to workplace procedures.
The Australian Resuscitation Council provides the national clinical guidance that informs CPR and resuscitation training in Australia. Your trainer will explain the correct process for your assessment and workplace setting.

Learn from an experienced Registered Nurse
Yatson Training’s lead trainer, Jackie Hislop RN, brings professional healthcare experience to the classroom. Jackie understands that educators need more than a certificate. You need practical skills that you can remember and use under pressure.
Her training approach is hands-on, interactive and easy to follow. You will have opportunities to ask questions, practise techniques and discuss how first aid procedures apply to your own centre.
The aim is to make the session useful and engaging rather than a dry, mandatory exercise. Jackie and the Yatson Training team support you from your first enquiry through to course completion and certification.
This approach suits:
- Early childhood educators.
- Childcare directors and nominated supervisors.
- Family day care educators.
- Preschool and kindergarten staff.
- Outside school hours care teams.
- Relief and casual educators.
- Students preparing to work in education and care.
- Small groups requiring a dedicated training session.
What to check before you enrol
Take a few minutes to confirm that the course meets your personal and workplace requirements.
Before booking, check that:
- The course is listed as HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
- Practical assessment is included.
- CPR is assessed on adult, child and infant manikins.
- You understand any pre-course learning requirements.
- Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) details are ready if required.
- The training provider explains certificate issue and renewal timeframes.
- The course date fits your roster and workplace obligations.
A fully online course may not meet the practical assessment requirements for childcare first aid. You need to demonstrate physical skills, including CPR, in person. Discuss any access or physical concerns with the training provider before enrolment.

Our recommendation for Albury-Wodonga childcare teams
Do not wait until a certificate has expired before arranging training.
Review your staff training records now. Identify who needs HLTAID012, who requires an annual CPR refresher and whether your roster provides appropriate coverage throughout the day.
Use this checklist:
- Check each educator’s first aid expiry date.
- Record annual CPR refresher dates separately.
- Confirm current asthma and anaphylaxis training.
- Keep action plans accessible and up to date.
- Make sure first aid kits are stocked.
- Check that emergency contact details are visible.
- Include first aid responsibilities in staff induction.
- Practise your centre’s emergency response procedures.
- Arrange refresher training before staff availability becomes limited.
Good workplace safety depends on preparation. A policy is only useful when staff understand it and can carry out the required actions.

Frequently asked questions

HLTAID012 is the specialist first aid unit designed for education and care settings. Childcare services should check their current staffing and qualification requirements under the National Quality Framework and confirm that their training remains approved and current.
How often do I need to renew HLTAID012?
First aid qualifications are generally renewed every three years. CPR training usually needs to be refreshed every year for education and care compliance. Check your certificate and workplace requirements.
Can I complete the whole course online?
Practical skills must be demonstrated. A course that is fully online may not satisfy the practical assessment requirements for childcare first aid. Confirm the delivery format before booking.
